I am a single American woman traveling to China. I was in Xiamen for 2 years previous and was returning. But, NEVER in the 2 years that I lived here was I prepared to stay at a totally Chinese hotel with very little English spoken and hard HARD bed, no food that could be prepared without MSG and too far away from anything else to eat elsewhere. The staff was very nice and as accommodating as they could be, but I am disgusted with CHINA EASTERN AIRLINES for CANCELING MY FLIGHT FROM SHANGHAI to XIAMEN after flying for 15 HOURS FROM Los Angeles....saying they would give me a voucher to stay where I wanted to and wouldn't depart for 24 hours after arriving in Shanghai. NOPE, when I arrived at the Shanghai airport it TOOK GOING UP and DOWN STAIRS WITH ALL OF MY LUGGAGE and NO HELP, to finally find someone that would help me. And that was AFTER I had to cause a scene because I was about to pass out from exhaustion. I don't know the language, so this was a very difficult and scary process on top of the exhaustion from the flight. Then without telling me where i was going a non English speaking Chinese led me out to a shuttle that took me to this Chinese Hotel that is AWAY FROM EVERYTHING! The hotel would not even furnish me WATER to drink and i had to keep asking for something to eat since there was no restaurants close by and walk to a little store to get water. If I had never been to China before this would have horrified me. I got 2 boiled eggs and some white rice, an apple and an orange finally from the front desk after finding there was nothing to eat at the little store, either and pleading with the front desk to get me SOMETHING. There was NO English speaking tv, and NO wireless internet...and the dial up was off and on. The bed was hard HARD HARD and I woke up during the night freezing...not knowing how to turn the heater on since it was ALL IN CHINESE. I have no idea how much this hotel costs, but if you are an American or no ability to communicate this will NOT be the place for YOU...and if you have a reservation with CHINA EASTERN AIRLINES and they cancel your flight and say they will put you in a COMFORTABLE HOTEL...DON"T BELIEVE THEM! I had a MISERABLE FIRST NIGHT BACK IN CHINA DUE TO CHINA EASTERN AIRLINES. The ONLY thing I can say about this place good is the politeness of the staff and eager to please the best they could figure out considering they knew very little English. PLUS it REEKED WITH CIGARETTE SMOKE which I am highly allergic to and I requested a smoke free room, so you know what they did? They removed the ash tray after I brought it to their attention and tried to explain I could smell the smoke! haha SHAME ON YOU...CHINA EASTERN AIRLINES for sending a FOREIGNER TO THIS HOTEL after CANCELING THEIR FLIGHT!
